Learning List has reviewed McGraw Hill’s American History: Connecting with the Past (Brinkley), Updated AP Edition. This comprehensive product supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) United States History courses. Content is available in print and digital formats with additional online components. Instruction provides an engaging survey of American history with a particular emphasis on the development of students’ historical thinking skills.
The text’s core content is presented in 32 chapters that cover native civilizations prior to European contact through the 2012 election and Affordable Care Act. Content is closely linked to the College Board’s course framework for AP U.S. History. Chapters open with “AP Focus” and “AP Connecting Concepts” features. AP Focus describes the historical thinking skills covered in the chapter and links content to the key concepts and thematic learning objectives of the College Board’s course framework. AP Connecting Concepts provides a short introduction to content followed by a list of important concepts addressed by instruction. Chapters end with a “Connecting the Themes” summary of the primary AP themes addressed by instruction and a set of “AP Test Practice” items that include multiple-choice, short answer, and essay questions formatted to reflect the AP exam.
American History includes a test bank for each historical period and historical thinking skill identified in the College Board’s course framework. Test banks contain questions that mirror the format of the AP U.S. History exam, including multiple choice, short answer, document-based, and essay questions. The test bank identifies the “Targeted Skills” (e.g., synthesis, causation, periodization) and references the key concepts and thematic learning objectives addressed by questions.
