National Geographic Learning/ Cengage Learning’s Biology: The Unity and Diversity of Life is a comprehensive biology course that supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) Biology courses.  Resources are available in print and eBook formats. Learning List recently reviewed eBook and digital materials for the course.

Biology: The Unity and Diversity of Life begins with a chapter that introduces the course’s themes (i.e., how living things are alike and different), the scientific method and experiments in biology, analysis of experimental results, and the limits of science. Subsequent chapters address cellular life, genetics, evolution, biodiversity, plants, animals, and ecology. eBooks contain vivid photographs, illustrations, and animations that help clarify concepts. Information about key figures and their contributions to science (e.g., Georges Cuvier), issue-related essays, and case studies are integrated throughout instruction.

Online materials to accompany chapter beginnings include a “How Would You Vote?” feature, that presents an issue related to the chapter’s content (e.g., What is the best way to deal with viral infections?). Students share their views in a discussion forum and choose a response (i.e., vote) from a set of multiple choice answers.  The question is revisited again at the close of the chapter to see if students’ thinking has changed. Online resources include highlighting and note taking tools, an audio reader, an interactive dictionary and glossary, flashcards of key terms and vocabulary, and an online study guide for each chapter, and a set of apps to support homework, study skills, and biology content.
