New Review: Perfection Learning’s United States History, Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination

Perfection Learning's United States History, Preparing for the Advanced Placement ExaminationLearning List has reviewed Perfection Learning’s United States History, Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination. This comprehensive print product supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) U.S. History courses. The text also may be used to supplement core instruction and as a test preparation resource. Instruction provides concise discussions of historical events, issues, and developments, and focuses on teaching students to analyze primary and secondary source resources and use evidence to support written arguments.

Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination begins with an introduction that provides an overview of the AP exam, a guide to using the text to support preparation for the exam, a summary of the course’s historical thinking skills and thematic learning objectives, and strategies for responding to the different types of questions students will see on the exam (e.g., multiple choice, short answer, document-based). Core content is presented in nine chronological periods that match the periods identified in the College Board’s course framework for AP U.S. History (e.g., Period 4: 1800-1848).

Each period is broken into chapters that cover smaller time spans within the overarching period (e.g. “The Age of Jefferson, 1800-1816”).  The instructional narrative is written simply and succinctly and will be accessible to AP students as well as other students, including struggling readers and ELLs. Each chapter ends with sets of stimulus-based multiple-choice questions and short-answer questions formatted to reflect the AP exam. The text ends with a full practice exam that reflects the AP U.S. History Exam in length and format.
