Content is organized in 16 modules made up of 65 lessons. Each module opens with a set of essential questions, the game design topics and learning objectives addressed by instruction, and list of learning outcomes (e.g., “Dynamically allocate game resources”). Lessons are short and focus on a specific essential question (e.g., “How is code used to move two instances in sync?”).

The use of GameMaker software enables students to be creative and instruction includes step-by-step guidance in the process of game development. Students are asked to create a digital portfolio of their creative work. A portfolio guide and rubric are provided.
