New Curriculum Review: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Into Reading Texas

Learning List recently reviewed Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Into Reading Texas, which was submitted for state adoption in Texas in response the Texas Education Agency’s Proclamation 2019 call for K-8 English language arts and reading (ELAR) products aligned to the new ELAR Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Instruction develops students’ reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills using authentic texts from a variety of genres.

Reading and writing instruction is presented in a workshop format that includes direct instruction, guided and independent practice, and application tasks. Activities include whole group and small group instruction, opportunities for collaborative student work, and periodic spiraled reviews that revisit previously learned concepts and their connection to current learning. Each week’s instruction includes a mindset (e.g., seeking challenges) that addresses social and emotional learning.
