At each grade level, STAAR Reading Practice begins with an overview of resources and the TEKS covered by instruction. Core content is broken into three sections (1) Literary Texts, (2) Informational Texts, and (3) Reading and Understanding Across Texts.
For literary and informational texts, an introduction provides an explanation of the text type, examples, and a brief discussion of the purpose, audience, and uses of each text type. A graphic organizer illustrates common features of each type of text. Students then practice reading several passages and answering text-based short answer and multiple-choice questions.
The section for Reading and Understanding Across Texts is a brief discussion of comparing and contrasting texts within the same text type or across different types. Students are then presented with two texts and asked to identify how they are similar and how they are different.
