Newsela is a digital platform that provides diverse content, lessons, and activities intended to supplement core curriculum in English Language Arts (ELA), social studies, or science. Learning List recently reviewed the content for ELA. The program intends to provide engaging content and lessons that offer relevance, choice, and skills practice to complement districts’ ELA instruction and core materials. 

The platform provides an abundance of diverse texts across genres, including current events. Texts are available at a variety of reading levels and include quizzes, writing tasks, and other activities. Additionally, the material includes text sets intended to supplement materials from specific publishers.

The flexible nature of the material enables teachers to customize content and activities to meet the individual learning needs of students. Teachers can also customize quizzes and writing tasks. The material is available in English and Spanish. Additionally, texts can be read using an embedded text-to-speech reader.
