Learning List has reviewed Perfection Learning’s AP Calculus AB/BC, Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examinations, which is a comprehensive product that supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC courses. Content is available in print format. The text provides a review of the prerequisite concepts (e.g., functions) for calculus and focused reviews of the concepts that make up each of the Big Ideas for AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC.
Instruction begins with a set of six lessons that review prerequisite concepts, such as functions, inverses, and parametric equations, followed by an assessment of these concepts. Core content is organized in four “Main Ideas” that match the College Board’s Big Ideas for AP Calculus: (1) limits, (2) derivatives, (3) integrals and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, and (4) series (BC only). Each Main Idea is broken into a set of lessons that provide a focused review of key concepts (e.g., The Trapezoidal Rule, logistic change). Main Idea lessons begin with a list of concepts and are broken into short sections that “Explain” each concept.
When students have completed each of the lessons in a Main Idea, they are presented with a “Summary Assessment” with questions that reflect that format of the AP exam. Each Summary Assessment includes a “Correlation Chart” that enables students to identify the concepts they have not mastered and redirects them to specific lessons in the Main Idea for further review. The text ends with four full-length comprehensive practice exams formatted to reflect the AP exams. Two exams are for Calculus AB and two exams are for Calculus BC.
